Queer Ecology: Exploring Identity and Belonging Through Eco-Poetry
Co-facilitated by Imogen Wade & Éloïse O’Dwyer-Armary, via the collective Collections Of Queer Poets, at the exhibition Safehaven, Exploring Safe Spaces by Meditation Pods Project, led by artist Sophie Wright.
The natural world is queer. It is not only humans that are attracted to the same sex, or have diverse family structures. Swans find themselves in same-sex pairings, clownfish change their sex during their lifetime, and male seahorses carry their young. The gender binaries of modern life often dissolve when we step foot into natural spaces, and in the woods we embrace the cyclical changes of seasons.
Join us for a creative workshop that delves into ecology, poetry and queer identity. We will investigate our connections to the natural world and the concept of belonging through writing exercises, a reflective time in the meditation pod and collaborative discussions. Using Mary Oliver’s poem ‘How I Go Into the Woods’ as our starting point, we will explore the different ways that we enter natural spaces and whom we enter them with.
